London shares opened higher as troubled bank Barclays posted strong first half results, traders said.
The FTSE 100 index added 12.70 points or 0.23 percent to 5,585.86 points at 8:22 am.
Barclays interim net profits shrank to ?70 million on vast exceptional charges, as it apologised again for the Libor rate-rigging scandal that has rocked the group.
Earnings after taxation shrank to the equivalent of 89 million euros or $110 million in the six months to June, compared with ?1.5 billion in the same period of the previous year.
However, excluding the charges, underlying pretax profit jumped 13 percent to ?4.23 billion, spurred by a 38 percent improvement in profits from wealth and investment management.
?We continue to deliver a good financial performance in the context of the current macroeconomic climate," said chairman Marcus Agius.
Barclays shares soared 4.88 percent to 161.10 pence, leading the gainers in the FTSE index.
Resources stocks also gained, with Evraz adding 1.36 percent to 223.70 pence, Kazakhmys rising 1.31 percent to 696 pence and Fresnillo going up 1.14 percent to 1,423 pence.
First half results from Pearson failed to impress investors and the publisher's shares sank 3.32 percent to 1,251 pence.
Operating profit dropped to ?188 million from ?208 million a year ago, though sales improved ?6 percent to ?2.6 billion.
The company reiterated its full year outlook of growth in sales and operating profit, saying: "At this early stage, Pearson sees good trading momentum in North America, International and the FT Group offsetting weakness in Professional Education and Penguin."
ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Modern lifestyles are generally quite different from those of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, a fact that some claim as the cause of the current rise in global obesity, but new results published July 25 in the open access journal PLoS ONE find that there is no difference between the energy expenditure of modern hunter-gatherers and Westerners, casting doubt on this theory.
The research team behind the study, led by Herman Pontzer of Hunter College in New York City, along with David Raichlen of the University of Arizona and Brian M. Wood of Stanford measured daily energy expenditure (calories per day) among the Hadza, a population of traditional hunter-gatherers living in the open savannah of northern Tanzania. Despite spending their days trekking long distances to forage for wild plants and game, the Hadza burned no more calories each day than adults in the U.S. and Europe. The team ran several analyses accounting for the effects of body weight, body fat percentage, age, and gender. In all analyses, daily energy expenditure among the Hadza hunter-gatherers was indistinguishable from that of Westerners. The study was the first to measure energy expenditure in hunter-gatherers directly; previous studies had relied entirely on estimates.
These findings upend the long-held assumption that our hunter-gatherer ancestors expended more energy than modern populations, and challenge the view that obesity in Western populations results from decreased energy expenditure. Instead, the similarity in daily energy expenditure across a broad range of lifestyles suggests that habitual metabolic rates are relatively constant among human populations. This in turn supports the view that the current rise in obesity is due to increased food consumption, not decreased energy expenditure.
The authors emphasize that physical exercise is nonetheless important for maintaining good health. In fact, the Hadza spend a greater percentage of their daily energy budget on physical activity than Westerners do, which may contribute to the health and vitality evident among older Hadza. Still, the similarity in daily energy expenditure between Hadza hunter-gatherers and Westerners suggests that we have more to learn about human physiology and health, particularly in non-Western settings.
"These results highlight the complexity of energy expenditure. It's not simply a function of physical activity," says Pontzer. "Our metabolic rates may be more a reflection of our shared evolutionary past than our diverse modern lifestyles."

Playing for a contender could invigorate once-great outfielder
Elaine Thompson / AP
Ichiro Suzuki's bat has declined over the last two seasons, but he still plays a strong outfield and possesses speed on the basepaths.

Baseball Expert Tony DeMarco has been covering the big leagues since 1987, and been casting Hall of Fame ballots for the last 15 years. He answers questions weekly here:
Q: Ichiro is a huge name, obviously, but has declined greatly in the last couple of seasons. What kind of impact do you think he can make with the Yankees? ? Harland Roberts, New York
A: Yes, Ichiro's downward-trending numbers are undeniable. His last outstanding season was 2010, when he batted .315 with a league-leading 214 hits. But even in that season, he fell off his career pace in runs scored, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS. Things have gone downhill in a hurry from there, as in 2011-12, Ichiro is a .268 hitter, his on-base percentage is right around .300 and his OPS is down to .644 ? about .100 points below his career mark.
But the Yankees were willing to gamble that Ichiro, 38, will be invigorated by the move from arguably the AL's worst team to arguably the best ? with another trip to the postseason pending ? and I agree that it's worth a shot.
A single in his first Yankee at-bat, and subsequent stolen base, showed there's still something left ? and it wouldn't shock me a bit if a recharged Ichiro hits close to .300, pulls a half-dozen homers into those ridiculously reachable right-field seats at Yankee Stadium, and plays regularly down the stretch in pinstripes. As for beyond this season, it's simply too early to tell.
But there is a far more-immediate need here, as the deal comes in the wake of Brett Gardner's loss due to a season-ending elbow injury, and Nick Swisher being temporarily sidelined by a hip injury. And don't underrate the four-game sweep suffered at the hands of the Oakland A's over the weekend as an impetus, either.
Click for related content
While manager Joe Girardi has indicated Ichiro will play mostly in left field once Swisher returns, it also won't surprise me if Ichiro ends up playing a lot in his customary right field ? where he has won 10 Gold Gloves (the last in 2010), and has a far stronger and accurate arm than Swisher.
But wherever Ichiro plays, he makes the Yankees' outfield defense better. He also brings a speed element (16 of 18 steal attempts this season) that was lost with Gardner's injury.
Ichiro's addition will take at-bats from the current left-field platoon of Raul Ibanez and Andruw Jones, but that makes the bench deeper, and Girardi has rotated several players through the DH spot, anyway.
So there really is much potentially to gain, and little downside risk here, as the prospects sent to the Mariners are fringe types, unlikely to contribute much at the big-league level.
Q: The A's are playing great baseball of late, winning games against good competition. How are they getting it done, and can they keep it up? ? Jeff Stockton, San Diego
A: No team is hotter, as the A's have gone 14-2 in July and 8-1 since the All-Star break ? taking their record from 37-42 to 51-44 and putting themselves in wild-card contention.
They do it with pitching, of course, as their home park is one of the most pitcher-friendly in the game. They lead the AL in ERA and opponents' batting average, their bullpen ERA is the only one in the AL under 3.00, and their walk rate (1.65 per game) has been the majors' best in July.
And it's no coincidence that the second-half surge has paralleled Yoenis Cespedes' hot streak ? 18 for 36 with four homers and nine RBI in nine games after the break.
Bob Melvin's team also has a knack for walk-off wins, with a major-league-leading 11, and that can get contagious, leading to overachieving seasons such as the 2011 Diamondbacks were able to pull off. And while nobody's threatening Rickey Henderson's stolen base records, these A's do run ? currently third in the AL in steals.
With Brett Anderson and Brandon McCarthy likely to return soon to join young starters Jarrod Parker and Tommy Milone, you wouldn't expect too much falloff in the staff's performance.
But the problem remains an offense that is last in the league in runs and batting average, and second-to-last in on-base percentage and slugging percentage ? and you don't make the postseason with that lack of production.
So the A's are looking for help, particularly at third base ? Chase Headley, among others ? and likely will make a deal, without getting carried away. You have to keep in mind that winning a wild-card spot now guarantees you nothing more than a one-game playoff, and that's why you're not seeing teams in wild-card contention (but not division-title contention) deal away elite prospects.
The A's chances of winning a playoff spot are enhanced by the AL East teams beating up on each other, but even so, they're one of six teams most likely shooting for one wild-card spot ? maybe two ? so the odds aren't good.
But they're sure fun to watch right now.
Q: Early in the season, you noted the Braves looked like they were coming to an end of a long run as contenders. Things have changed since then, and they look like a reasonable bet for a wildcard, if not the division title. What are they doing now that wasn't happening earlier? ? David Pabon, Mission Hills, Calif.
A: I did pick the Braves to finish fourth in the NL East, but with 83 wins, so it's not as if I thought they were falling apart.
I had a handful of concerns about them bouncing back from their 2011 collapse, and some of those problem areas still exist. But the Braves sit eight games over .500 in second place, and in solid wild-card contention ? thanks in part to the bigger problems of the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies.
My Braves concerns were: A rotation somewhat in flux ? Tim Hudson, Tommy Hanson and Jair Jurrjens were coming off 2011 injuries. While the first two have been solid, the latter still is struggling.
Meanwhile, were the younger starting pitchers ready to step up? The answer has turned out to be no, and in fact, the Braves reportedly could be adding Ryan Dempster to their rotation ? a nice pickup if it happens. And how about Ben Sheets' comeback? Nobody was expecting him to throw 12 shutout innings in his first two starts since 2010.
Shortstop was another concern, and they're trying Paul Janish after the unfortunate injury to Andrelton Simmons, who looks like he'll be one of the game's better defensive shortstops.
Could the heavily-worked threesome of Craig Kimbrel, Jonny Venters and Eric O'Flaherty do it for a second year in a row? Yes in two of three cases, but Venters has struggled and spent time on the DL. Fortunately, Kris Medlen has stepped up.
And finally, the health of Chipper Jones/lack of power in the lineup. While the Braves are middle-of-the-NL-pack in homers, they are fourth in runs scored, so they're scoring enough to be a playoff team. Still, there is at least speculation about a deal for Justin Upton (although if he is dealt, it's far more likely to come in the off-season, rather than in the next week).
It all adds up to the Braves being one of eight teams fighting for the five NL playoff spots ? the Nationals, Reds, Pirates, Cardinals, Giants, Dodgers and Diamondbacks being the others ? and capable of passing a Nationals team that will be shutting down their ace pitcher in September.
The next checkpoint is the July 31 trade deadline, which as we saw once again with the Cardinals last season, can dramatically change teams' fortunes.

Rivera not returning this year
HBT: Mariano Rivera was proceeding as if he were going to pitch this September, but GM Brian Cashman says that's not happening.
Srinagar, July 24: A three-day workshop on English Language Teaching (ELT) began at the University of Kashmir on Tuesday. ?The workshop is organized by the Department of English in collaboration with the Cambridge University Press, New Delhi in order to equip college teachers with effective pedagogy, resources, ideas and activities to make the overall teaching-learning process participatory and interactive. ?The ELT- workshop is a regular feature of the English Department since 2007. According to the organizers, it provides the teachers with opportunities to understand and explore the ways of encouraging student participation and also help them present and practice vocabulary and grammar through learner-centric approaches. This in turn helps students develop effective listening, efficient reading, powerful speaking and professional writing skills, they said. ?In her welcome address, the workshop Director and Head Department of English Prof Lilly Want said that the focus of the workshop shall be on grammar-syllabus recommended at the undergraduate level: The objective is to make college teachers reflect on how to enhance the general communicative competence and the more technical skills of students in their teaching situation, she said. ?She said the existing pedagogy has necessarily led to conventional lecture-based sessions on the part of teachers and rote memorization on part of students. There is a dire need to integrate lecture-oriented theory classes with tutorial classes for reinforcing learning and creative utilization and for acquiring command over language and enriching the students critical and research perspectives to English Literature, she said. ?In his presidential address, the KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat said: The aim of such workshops should be to encourage high standards of written and spoken English by resorting to the widely-accepted standards of English grammar, intelligible pronunciation and legible writing. ?While appreciating the teachers and students of Kashmir for their flawless accent in spoken English, Prof Talat said Both the teachers and the students from Kashmir have a very good accent in English language and this is something which is known all over the country. However our students and teachers need to work on their writing skills and participate more in such workshops if they desire to see their works published in international journals. ?Prof Talat suggested the Department of English to organize more such workshops in future with few sessions on professional writing for the benefit of teachers and students. ?Speaking on the occasion Dr CLN Prakash, who is coordinator of ELT workshops from the Cambridge University Press, said: Such workshops provide great opportunity to the teachers to hone their skills and review the methods and techniques of teaching so that they remain in tune with the changing times and new trends in the pedagogy. ?Dr Prakash, who is also the resource person for the workshop, said that the pedagogy of teachers in English literature and language needs rethinking and the present workshop is motivated by this need to provide possible alternatives to the existing rather prescribed pedagogy. ?Dr Nusrat from the Department of English conducted the proceedings of the inaugural event while Dr Tasleem War presented vote of thanks.

A week ago gunshots were fired at a block party in Scarborough, an area of Toronto, killing and injuring 25 people. A fourteen year old girl and a twenty-three old man died at the scene, and 23 other people were injured. The Toronto Police Chief, William Blair, said that the horrible crime demands a response from the whole city. Here's our view about the very sad event.
To be begin with, we offer our prayers for those who died, the injured and their families. May God give them the strength and consolation to carry on with their lives. The entire city has great need of God's help. Much has been said in reaction to the tragedy about gang violence and the easy access to guns. Even more has been written on the need for better?policing, on cracking down on illegally smuggled weapons from the United States, on the banning of handguns, on poverty, on improved social services and on tighter security for public housing. All these measures sound good, but they miss the point because we are mostly in denial about the major causes of the gun violence and the deaths in out streets. Most of our politicians at all levels of government are too eager to either pass the buck or keep hiding behind the deceptive language of political correctness and thus fail to tackle the truth about the root cause of the problem head on.
We shouldn't be afraid as a society to confront the important F-words: Family and fatherhood. When I was teaching students in the care of the Catholic Children's Aid Society, it was almost always family dysfunctions that brought the children to our group home. As the Catholic teacher, I spent nearly eleven years working with many well meaning youth workers trying our best to get these broken and troubled young men and women back to regular schools. These students were placed in our program because they were going through a time of serious personal crisis, many by the time they got to our program had spent time in jail, but the underlying problem had for most of them started long before they arrived to our alternative school: the physical, mental, social and emotional scars had begun in the family, even as far back as the time they were merely babies.
These students without exception knew only hurt and pain and so naturally it's what they were good at dishing out to others. Our profit driven culture and the media offer no remedy here. Just think of the steady diet of violence most children are exposed to in the movies, the video games, the television shows and the music that morally anesthetizes them and exploits them for profits daily.
In our care and treatment centre, we enrolled close to 200 students over the years that I was there. Here are some of the presenting issues: they were students who would intentionally cut themselves, students who had committed crimes of theft, breaking and entering and assaulted others, students who had been abused at home by a parent, a step-parent or an uncle, students who were prostituting themselves, students who were depressed and suicidal, students with drug abuse and the list went on. In one way or another there were all badly damaged souls in need of redemption. In all those years I never met with one parent, not one father or mother who came to see us concerned about the well being of their child. How do you think a child feels when they are abandoned by their parents?
Once a child completely loses the love and support of his/her parents and joins a gang, committing crimes, hurting someone even shooting them to kill and ending up in jail aren't as bad as not being cared for and loved. Violent behaviour is rewarded in a gang because it gives a member a sense of belonging, of power and acceptance. When there's nobody there in the lives of children to tell them that the are made in the image of God, that God loves them and so do the parents, they too easily can end up finding destructive and corrosive images of themselves to turn to and sadly act out.
From my experience, it's a strong, caring and loving family unit that can help solve gun violence, gang membership and the injuries and deaths among young people. We should be asking ourselves: Why do we abandon a single mother to try to raise two or more children on her own? Why are there so many absent fathers who shirk their responsibility as fathers? Once the all-day kindergarten progran is fully implemented, our province plans to spend billions of dollars in order to pay for this baby sitting service. This is the state's early start to child brainwashing. It will do nothing to build healthier families.
Wouldn't the money be better spent on social policies that would encourage parents to work and stay together for the good of the children? Instead of attacking the family unit and help it fragment further, the government ought to promote initiatives that help keep the family strong in order that the children grow up healthy and?will one day contribute to the betterment of society. Imagine the societal good for parents and children that could result if every couple wanting to get married in Toronto was urged to take a course on the Theology of the Body?
We end this entry with a quote from Bill Cosby from his honest?address to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, NCAAP in 2004. He wad not being funny when said this: "... In our streets we have 50% drop out rate. No longer is a person embarrassed because they are pregnant without a husband. No longer is a boy considered an embarrassment if he tries to run away from being the father of the unmarried child. ... In the neighbourhood that most of us grew up in, parenting is not going on. I'm talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were they when he was two" Where were they when he was twelve? Where were they when he was 18, and how come you don't know he had a pistol?" Cosby was seriously talking about America, and in Canada too, since the problem of violence, gangs and guns was and is regrettably the same, in both countries, so many years later.
We should not be afraid of speaking the truth about the importance of strong, loving fathers in raising good, spiritual and responsible children. We should not be afraid of saying that fathers and mothers have a duty to do all they can to make sure their children are living healthy and virtuous lives. If the parents are Christian, they have the added vocation of introducing them to the faith by faithfully practicing it. If as a society we are willing to speak the truth on this issue, then we can hope to begin solving the violence and senseless killings on our streets, or will we continue to be in denial and afraid of truly addressing the F-words with our lives?
A program of strength training is a form of training that it had been for many years under different names. You may have heard either weight lifting or toning, which is essentially the same techniques to make a profit.
Be in its basic sense, what do we methodically increase their workload, so that the muscles stimulated constantly, they are constantly working means. Interestingly, most people do not understand why they should undertake strength training exercise program, rather than simply divide in cardio workouts, which are intended for weight loss. This was actually answered by the East Carolina University. Here it was found that strength training workouts has improved the overall composition of the body by more than 30 percent.
The technique is made use of by many athletes. These range from participants in the Olympics for many football players and other athletes. It is imperative to the methodology, understand the program, which defines the end of highly effective and efficient when it comes to improving the metabolic rate. Exercises in a manner which carried out a counter-force produced against the muscles. This is done by bending, pressing, pressing or stretching. The muscle is gradually overwhelmed, leading to the formation of micro-tears in the process.
Combined with the right amount of rest with a high protein diet, these tears are recommended by the system, adding muscle to the top of the wound so that it is tearing in the future. Therefore it is important to constantly increase the workload, you can not in your muscle tissue to make sure. It is this process of repair can help you burn fat, while improving the muscle.
A major advantage of a resistance training plan is to allow flexibility for the camera, you can use. It may be that performed with bands, exercises, increase the weight machines and free weights.
The benefits that have come with such a training numerous. It is certainly highlighted the improved tone of muscle tissue and muscle strength. This not only improves the general appearance of a person, but also a better athletic performance. Also improves posture. The metabolic rate is extremely important, and also greatly improved his speed.
Muscles need a lot of your energy to operate, which means that if you have more muscle, you use more calories every day, even if you do not, other physical activities! Finally, strength training workouts are also ideal for improving bone health. To decline after thirty years, the bone mass of people actually begins. This can lead to many diseases such as osteoporosis and arthritis lead. To prevent resistance workouts, bone degeneration.
We just have to see if they want their workouts at the gym or at home. While at home, workout routines can be completed through participation in the training of body weight, or you can invest in basic research. Sticking to a good stretching and flexibility program will help a long way to minimize the potential risk of injury.
Regardless of how one chooses to go through a training program of resistance, the results will almost certainly astonishing, especially when coupled with interval training. Also holds the final result of the training a lot longer compared to the training. This implies that there is to build muscle and lose weight for the best part of the day.

In a landmark decision, the First Circuit Court of Appeals held in Patco Construction Company, Inc. v. People?s United Bank, No. 11-2031 (1st Cir. July 3, 2012) ?that People?s United Bank (d/b/a Ocean Bank) was required to reimburse its customer, PATCO Construction Co., for approximately $580,000 which had been stolen from PATCO?S bank account.? In so doing, the Court reversed the decision of the United States District Court for the District of Maine which had granted summary judgment in the bank?s favor.
The dispute arose when Ocean Bank authorized six fraudulent withdrawals over seven days from an online account held by PATCO.? While the bank?s security system flagged each one of the transactions as ?high risk? because they were inconsistent with the timing, value, and geographic location of PATCO?s regular payment orders, the bank?s security system did not notify PATCO of this information and allowed the payments to go through. In light of this omission, PATCO sued, alleging that Ocean Bank should bear responsibility for the loss because its security system was not ?commercially reasonable? under the Uniform Commercial Code, as codified under Maine Law.
Ocean Bank moved for summary judgment on the basis that its use of a one-time log-in and password security requirement for transaction authentication was sufficient to comply with the ?commercially reasonable? standards.? The District Court agreed and granted the bank?s motion.
On appeal, the First Circuit reversed, based on its determination that the bank?s ?generic ?one-size-fits-all? approach to customers violates Article 4A?s instruction to take the customer?s circumstances into account.?? The Court explained that Ocean Bank?s failure to implement enhanced security procedures was unreasonable in light of its knowledge of ongoing fraud involving the same measures as had been used with respect to PATCO?s account.? When the fraud re-occurred in this ?unordinary? situation, the Court held that it was ?commercially unreasonable? for Ocean Bank?s security system to trigger only those security measures which were applicable to ?ordinary? transactions.? The Court reasoned the ?unprecedentedly high risk scores? on the potential transactions were well above PATCO?s regular risk scores and therefore should have triggered extra security measures to authenticate the transactions. The Court stressed, however, that it was the bank?s ?collective failures? taken as a whole, rather than any single failure, which rendered its security system commercially unreasonable under the circumstances.
The PATCO decision could have significant implications for financial institutions and their insurers, as it has the potential to open the ?floodgates? for businesses victimized by cyber fraudsters to sue their banks in order to recover misappropriated funds. It also could impact similar lawsuits currently pending, such as Choice Escrow and Land Title, LLC v. BancorpSouth Bank, Case No. 2010cv03531 (W.D. Miss.), which involves loss arising from ACH and wire fraud.
On the other hand, the First Circuit in PATCO suggested several proactive measures which might enable financial institutions to avoid the fate suffered by Ocean Bank.? Among other things, the Court identified the following enhanced security procedures: ?(i) manual reviews of suspect transactions by actual personnel to determine the legitimacy of a transaction, (ii) eschew a ?one-size-fits-all? security approach for customers, and (iii) ?customer verification? or notification to authenticate uncharacteristic or suspicious transactions.
At the same time, the Court noted that customers such as PATCO also might have certain responsibilities under Article 4A of the UCC, even when its bank?s security measures are found to be ?commercially unreasonable,?? although the Court left open the question of what those obligations might be.? Of course, whatever they may be, they did not exist on the facts presented.
PATCO is but one more example of the value and import of insurance products such as cyber, fidelity and related E&O coverages in an ever-changing virtual economy. Financial institutions, commercial entities and even individual account-holders cannot rely on others to protect them. Rather, they need to take pro-active steps to secure their interests, including purchasing tailored insurance which responds to their changing needs.? At the same time, the insurance industry must continue to stay ahead of the curve by anticipating the evolving risks and providing products which will address a rapidly-evolving market.

University of Utah chemist gets another big tribute
SALT LAKE CITY, July 23, 2012 Only months after collecting a National Medal of Science from President Barack Obama, University of Utah organic chemist Peter J. Stang has won the highest honor from the world's largest scientific group: the 2013 Priestley Medal from the American Chemical Society.
The medal basically a lifetime achievement award for chemists "recognizes Stang's cutting-edge research that has had far-reaching implications for many areas of science, including drug development and more efficient ways to produce gasoline and home heating oil," the 164,000-member society said in announcing the honor.
"I am truly delighted and honored to receive this most prestigious American Chemical Society Award," says Stang, 70, a distinguished professor of chemistry whose family fled Hungary when he was a teenager after the Communist takeover in 1956. "It is humbling to be listed among the distinguished previous recipients."
"Of course, much of the credit belongs to my able and dedicated undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral co-workers, who actually carried out the experimental work over my 43-year career at Utah," he adds. "This award also indicates that it is possible to do cutting-edge, world-class research at the University of Utah."
The gold Priestley Medal first bestowed in 1922 is named for chemist and theologian Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), whose discovery of oxygen in 1774 explained why and how things burn, and that air was made of a mixture of gases. Priestley also invented carbonated water and the rubber eraser. His unorthodox religious writings and support for the American and French revolutions forced him to flee England for Pennsylvania in 1794.
Stang has served as editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society since 2002. He and a staff of seven process more than 12,000 research manuscripts a year.
Last year, President Obama honored Stang at the White House along with other winners of the National Medal of Science, the highest U.S. honor for a scientist or engineer.
University of Utah President David Pershing, a distinguished professor of chemical engineering, applauds Stang and his new honor.
"I am exceedingly proud of Peter, and this is a fitting tribute to his lifelong dedication to chemistry," Pershing says. "He is absolutely committed to the highest research standards and the best education for his students."
Stang says he is "grateful to the citizens of Utah for affording me the opportunity to educate and work with young people and be a member of the faculty of the University of Utah for over 40 years."
In addition to the Priestley Medal, the American Chemical Society also inducted Stang and Henry White as fellows of the society. White is a distinguished professor and chairman of chemistry at the University of Utah.
For the past 20 years, Stang has pioneered the field of "supramolecular chemistry," which involves the spontaneous formation of large, complex molecules from predesigned, simple molecules that Stang compares with building blocks in a Lego toy set.
"The molecules could have uses as drug-delivery vehicles and as key players in making oil refining faster and more efficient," the American Chemical Society says.
Stang adds: "Although at the moment this is just fundamental research, it will have major impact on nanotechnology as well as biomedicine. It might enable targeted drug delivery that will make modern drugs more effective and minimize undesirable side effects."
Stang earned his chemistry Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, did postdoctoral research at Princeton University, and joined the University of Utah faculty in 1969. He chaired the Department of Chemistry during 1989-1995, and then served as dean of the College of Science during 1997-2007.
In 2011, Stang was ranked 69th on a list of the world's top 100 chemists, based on scientific impact scores of their published work. The list, compiled by Times Higher Education in Britain, put him in the top 1 percent of the top 1 percent of all chemists worldwide.
Stang previously won numerous other awards. He was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences in 2000 and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2002.
Stang's mother was a German and his father a Hungarian, and the couple met in Paris. Stang was born in Nuremberg, Germany, but lived in Hungary through his first year in high school.
When Stang was 15, he, his parents and his two sisters fled Hungary in 1956, just days after the Soviet Union sent tanks into the country to suppress the Hungarian uprising. The family moved to Chicago. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1962.

Publication year: 2012Source:Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Volume 106, Issue 8Ta-Chung Wu, Wei-Yi Lei, Ming-Cheh Chen, Chi-Tan Hu Strongyloidiasis, caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions. Whether or not the infection rate is higher among indigenous populations in Taiwan remains unclear. The aim of our study was to assess the racial demographics, diagnoses and clinical details of strongyloidiasis. A total of 41 patients (27 males and 14 females) with strongyloidiasis at a tertiary referral centre in eastern Taiwan in a 21-year period were investigated retrospectively. The majority (36/41, 88%) of these patients lived in rural townships.

Star Trek: The Next Generation may be coming to your living rooms soon courtesy of some hot new Blu-ray pressing, but one of the most compelling pieces of the technology shown on that series still remains elusive: the holodeck. Don't get down, sunshine, because we might soon be making our first, tentative steps into a virtual courtesy of Project Holodeck. It's underway at USC's School of Cinematic Arts as well as the Viterbi School of Engineering and starts out with a pair of Project Oculus glasses. These glasses, which were shown off at E3 by none other than John Carmack, cram a 1,280 x 800 display into a pair of glasses that present a wide, truly immersive field of view. Pair that with a PlayStation Move for head tracking and a Razer Hydra controller and you have the beginnings of a proper virtual reality environment.
An early concept of what the complete system might feel like can be found after the break, a couple of people acting out a sequence from Skies of Arcadia, which could be called a spiritual inspiration for the first game designed for Project Holodeck: Wild Skies. In it, two people "pilot a massive airship through a exotic world of floating islands" -- though whether they look as kawaii as their Dreamcast predecessors remains to be seen. When you might actually get your hands on the system is also unknown, but one piece of the puzzle, the Oculus Rift glasses, are said to be hitting Kickstarter any day now -- for an anticipated price of just $500. Bat'leth and copy of Workin' out with Worf not included.
Partnering with HBA, a team from the University of Denver took home top honors for the ?Spa of the Future? Student Challenge Competition at the Global Spa & Wellness Summit. The winning concept, known as ?Defiant!,? targets total wellness for teen girls. The spa foregoes the stereotypical ?pampering-patronizing-pink-and-sparkly-manicure? teen spa model to tackle the emotional, physical, and social needs of real girls. Designed as a girl?s ?Fourth Place? (not home, school, or the mall), the spa focuses on self-care, self-acceptance, and support from the all-female staff.
Swiping her ?D-Life? card at ?Debut? (the reception desk), girls enter a fun, high-tech social place. They can hang out in ?Daydream,? the pillow- and iPad-packed central lounge, where they can order from the healthy caf?, Devour, or hit the ?Debauchery Den? with its ?Dirty Girl? mudbaths and ?Drip-Drop? rain walk. At ?Define? (the fitness studio), hip-hop dance, punk aerobics, and meditation are on the menu. At ?Defuse? (the spa, with shorter, affordable treatments), girls can get acne treatments or post-soccer-game leg massages. Meanwhile, teens can meet privately with staff at ?Devotion?? for help with issues they face. Enrichment programming spans motivational speeches from female CEOs to advice on dealing with mean girls. Smart technology abounds: from rewards for foursquare check-ins, to allowing parents to confirm online their daughter is safely at the spa. Smart marketing strategies also play a big role, from the wide array of party packages and membership levels to local flash mob approaches.
The student team included Lian Duan, Molly Tompkins, and Jing Wan, who were paired with HBA director Cameron Zentz and associate John Sands to bring the students? ideas to life. Teams from Cornell University, the University of Houston, and Penn State University received second and third place awards, respectively
