Dresden physicists have recently observed how electrons in individual quantum dots absorb energy and emit it again as light

Quantum dots are nanostructures of semiconducting materials that behave a lot like single atoms and are very easy to produce. Given their special properties, researchers see huge potential for quantum dots in technological applications. Before this can happen, however, we need a better understanding of how the electrons "trapped" inside them behave. Dresden physicists have recently observed how electrons in individual quantum dots absorb energy and emit it again as light. Their results were recently published in the journal "Nano Letters".

Quantum dots look like miniscule pyramids. Inside each of these nano-pyramids are always only one or two electrons that essentially "feel" the constricting walls around them and are therefore tightly constrained in their mobility. Scientists from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), TU Dresden and the Leibniz Institute for solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) have now studied the special energy states of the electrons trapped inside individual quantum dots.

Sharp energy levels

The behaviour of electrons in a material essentially determines its properties. Being spatially constrained in all three spatial dimensions, electrons inside a nano-pyramid can only occupy very specific energy levels which is why quantum dots are also called "artificial atoms". Where these energy levels lie depends on the chemical composition of the semiconductor material as well as the size of the nano-pyramid. "These sharply defined energy levels are exploited, for example, in highly energy-efficient lasers based on quantum dots. The light is produced when an electron drops from a higher energy level into a lower one. The energy difference between the two levels determines the colour of the light," Dr. Stephan Winnerl of HZDR explains.

Seeing electrons inside individual quantum dots

The researchers in Dresden working with Dr. Winnerl were recently the first to succeed in scanning transitions between energy levels in single quantum dots using infrared light. Although, they could only do this after overcoming a certain hurdle: While the pyramids of indium arsenide or indium gallium arsenide form spontaneously during a specific mode of crystal growth, their size varies within a certain range. Studying them with infrared light, for example, one obtains blurred signals because electrons in different sized pyramids respond to different infrared energies. This is why it is so important to obtain a detailed view of the electrons trapped inside a single quantum dot.

The scientists approached this task with the special method of scanning near-field microscopy. Laser light is shone onto a metallic tip less than 100 nanometers thick, which strongly collimates the light to a hundred times smaller than the wavelength of light, which is the spatial resolution limit for "conventional" optics using lenses and mirrors. By focusing this collimated light precisely onto one pyramid, energy is donated to the electrons, thereby exciting them to a higher energy level. This energy transfer can be measured by watching the infrared light scattered from the tip in this process. While near-field microscopy involves major signal losses, the light beam is still strong enough to excite the electrons inside a nano-pyramid. The method is also so sensitive that it can create a nanoscale image in which the one or two electrons inside a quantum dot stand out in clear contrast. In this fashion, Stephan Winnerl and his colleagues from HZDR, plus physicists from TU and IFW Dresden, studied the behaviour of electrons inside a quantum dot in great detail, thereby contributing towards our understanding of them.

Infrared light from the free electron laser

The infrared light used in the experiments came from the free electron laser at HZDR. This special laser is an ideal infrared radiation source for such experiments because the energy of its light can be adjusted to precisely match the energy level inside the quantum dots. The laser also delivers such intense radiation that it more than makes up for the unavoidable losses inherent to the method.

"Next, we intend to reveal the behaviour of electrons inside quantum dots at lower temperatures," Dr. Winnerl says. "From these experiments, we hope to gain even more precise insights into the confined behavior of these electrons. In particular, we want to gain a much better understanding of how the electrons interact with one another as well as with the vibrations of the crystal lattice." Thanks to its intense laser flashes in a broad, freely selectable spectral range, the free electron laser offers ideal conditions for the method of near-field microscopy in Dresden, which benefits particularly from the close collaboration with Prof. Lukas Eng of TU Dresden in the scope of DRESDEN-concept.

3D Printer Form 1 Gets 6X Its $100K Funding Goal On Kickstarter? In One Day

form1main3D printing is coming into its own. No longer relegated to the professional sector, anyone who has the cash can essentially join in the fun with a Makerbot or a RepRap. But FormLabs has found a way to bring the high-end performance of top-notch machines down to the price of a Makerbot. Yesterday, they launched the Form 1, an affordable, professional 3D printer, on Kickstarter with the goal of reaching $100,000 in funding in one month. Today, they've received about $660,000 and have over 400 backers. And the number keeps climbing.

What place do your pets have in estate planning? | Alpharetta ...

Have you ever stopped to think about what would happen to your pet or pets in the event of your untimely death? For many people, there may be an assumption that somebody will step in to care for the ownerless pet. While this may be true for some, it is no guarantee. Especially for those who are single or elderly, the question of what happens to their pet may not be one they wish to leave to chance.

Including pets in estate planning has gained popularity in recent years. In Georgia, a law passed in 2010 even began recognizing pet trust litigation, leaving owners more planning options than simply giving instructions in their will.

Although a person can specify his or her wishes for a pet in a will, it isn't possible to name the pet as a beneficiary of the estate, since pets are considered property, and property cannot inherit property. In addition, illnesses during an estate owner's lifetime or delays in the administration of their estate after death could prevent a chosen caregiver from actually being selected or could prevent them from receiving the funds they need to care for the pet.

A good strategy to plan to coverage these possibilities is to include language about pets in a financial power of attorney or revocable living trust. The former allows the pets to be provided for in the event of incapacity, and the latter allows one to provide funds, directions for care and burial instructions.

Those who want to ensure their pets will be cared for after they are gone should speak with an experienced estate planning attorney to determine the best way to do so.

Apple announces iPhone 5 event for September 12

Apple announces iPhone 5 event for September 12

Apple has announced their September 12 special event, expected to see the introduction of the next generation iPhone 5. The information on the invitation is sparse. According to the graphic shared by Jim Dalrymple of The Loop, it shows the number 12 (the date of the event), and the number 5 (make of that what you will), along with the following line: "It's almost here". According to Jim:

The invitation I received says the event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts at 10:00 am.

iMore posted the September 12 Apple event date back on July 30, along with what we believe to be the U.S. launch date of September 21. Back on August 13 we posted what we believe is the second wave launch date of October 5.

For more on the iPhone 5, including previews of the expected features, check out our iPhone 5 page and make sure you enter our $500 iPhone 5 giveaway now!

Understanding The Importance Of Business Website Design And Web

by SYA on September 5, 2012

Utilizing the internet and building your own website for your business has developed into common trend due to its convenience.

The first reason why individuals like a website is because of whatever they see. When people check-out your business website, you would probably like them to stay. When website visitors really like what they notice, they eventually begin to browse through your site. But the problem right now is ?how can we accomplish this?? and the solution is easy, small business advertising and web site design.

Building your business site could be a little too much to manage especially for individuals who have no idea about website designing. Since it incorporates preparing, building, researching as well as planning what your internet site would most likely look like. It is probably much better to entrust it to the pros. But needless to say, helping out with a few developing wouldn?t hurt.

Because of the growing demand for web page design and online advertising, many organizations and private web developers have emerged. The creation of different plans and computer programs has helped to develop better solutions for business owners to create their sites and advertise online. Numerous program designers have actually created user-friendly applications with very simple features that have very easy guidelines to assist almost anyone. Learning how to create a websites has become a lot easier. Though advanced design is still a lot more challenging for the average person, several affordable programs being offered on the internet come with advanced options that may be preprogrammed. All you need to do is install them.

Making your very own website online takes a lot of effort and time, and of course money. There is just so much investment in setting up your business, making a website and promoting it online. Some individuals eventually get drained midway through the entire process. This is why it is very important to observe each step of the development. Hiring another person to develop your site does not always mean you will never be there to monitor their work. It?s always important to know what is happening.

Putting up a small business is not easy. A large investment similar to a website is your solution to marketing your business and advertising on the web. Since everything is on the line, it will be a complete waste of resources and effort to think that a very simple detail could imply complete success or absolute disaster for you and your small business. Always keep in mind to go through the steps and observe your progress. Don?t just depend on other people to accomplish everything for you.

Staycation: Armani Dubai Hotel | Kero's Celebration

Where do I even start? I am still reeling from the wondrous experience!

We arrived earlier than the check in time. We thought of staying in the lobby and drink the exquisite design Giorgio Armani is famous for. But each and every staff is attentive when we arrived. We were ushered pass the shadowy lobby with its spider web like steel structure. My eyes took time to adjust as there was not a sight of gold (LOL!) Dubai hotels are famous for. Everything is subdued and restraint yet speaks opulence. Dark rich brown walls against cream and grey upholstery.? And occasionally broken by small rectangular silk orange seat cushions. The flowers in lacquer vases are arranged exquisitely and before my eyes could wander further, a tall white man came forward with such dazzling, sincere smile. He introduced himself as Boris, our lifestyle manager.

Check-in was quick. During phone reservation, I booked for Armani Classic Room and asked for? a higher floor if available. Boris had all these in his notes and took us to 39th floor with? sweeping views of the city. Although he did mention the room given to us was bigger than the standard classic room, it was just too big. Not that I was complaining but this is definitely not 70 or 75 square-meter guest room.

They gave us Armani Premiere Suite.

They gave us their signature white chocolate cheesecake from Armani Ristorante.

They left us a note of well-wishes.

So this is designer-pampering ((^_^)).

Although Giorgio Armani meticulously supervised the entire design of the hotel, down to the room controls and the soap, he was backed up by Wilson Associates, the interior design firm headquartered in Dallas.

The lobby dominated by a tubular arch construction is created by? French-American sculptor and artist Louise Bourgeois.

After the lobby, a carpeted corridor leads you to the lift. On both sides are Armani Retail Stores including Armani Fiori and Armani Dolci.? The public spaces and 160 guest rooms and suites are located mostly on the first eight floors of the tower, plus floors 38 and 39, with 144 Armani-designed short-stay apartments on floors 9 through 16.

Is this how it feels and look like when you board a spaceship? The hallways to the residence has futuristic feel.

Living room of Armani Premier Suite. The wall hides the well-stocked private mini bar and entertainment system.

Probably the best-smelling bedroom with walk-in closet and ensuite full? bath. The subtle fragrance of the room makes you want to stay in there all day ? masculine, sexy, inviting.

Monogrammed towels. Tempting as it was, I didn?t brought home any. Do know that they profile you in every hotel you stay. It is best to keep your record clean.

View from the bedroom. We slept really late just watching the city go by.

?Outdoor swimming pool.

Verdict: If you can?t buy them, stay with them. The Milanese designer? is highly revered and almost legendary in the world of art, design, and fashion. I will never afford any of its item ? not even a bottle of Armani parfum.? Truly, Armani Hotel Dubai is expensive but like any avid traveler, a designer hotel is a must on your bucket list. I thoroughly believe the experience and their impeccable hospitality is worth every penny.

Tips For Successfully Marketing Your Internet Business

Share

When you market and sell merchandise online, it is called web marketing or Internet marketing. It can be difficult to know where to start, but it needn?t be daunting. Keep reading for some great advice.

Use tech tools to find how well your internet marketing campaign is working for you. For example, there are a number of airline corporations that now have a number of trackers which can compare the amount of visitors against sales and customers who come back repeatedly.

The first step in Internet marketing is to develop a website that makes a statement. You?ll need to ensure your site stands out from the rest to drive visitor traffic. You should showcase something you offer that no one else does.

Make sure your website?s tag defines the primary focus of your site. The tag for your site, at the top of the browser window, is a big factor in how people see your site. There stands a chance of losing potential consumers when they become too confused or unsettled by the things you?ve written.

When you create your website, you should concentrate on including thorough and high-quality content. You want your customers to be as aware as possible about the products they might be buying. Do not repeat yourself, fresh content is the key.

Take advantage of the many cost effective resources on the internet as a means to improve your marketing campaign. Consider joining up with an online forum, groups in your hometown, or borrowing books from your local library.

Consider what a customer would think of your web page when you are reviewing it. Is it truly user-friendly? Does it engage your customers? Is the ordering process quick and effective? Make sure that you maximize the quality and functionality of your site to keep your customers.

Don?t just imitate others if achieving internet marketing success is what you want. Advanced filters exist today which will find any duplicate content, meaning your reputation will be ruined as well as your chances for success. Always strive for uniqueness.

Be active on the major social media networks to increase your customer base. Creating a Facebook page and a Twitter can get you more clients. A good site that will let you have interaction with customers is Twitter.

One new Internet marketing strategy is to create a public relations page for your company. You could also try to get some of the content on this page published in newspapers and online magazines. This is an excellent way to get make your business easily accessible to the public and to get it noticed.

Internet marketing is all about finding a problem and trying to fix it. When you start your day, create a list of questions that need answering. If you help other people with their issues, then they will purchase your products and tell others about it, that is what you want.

Create very easy to read links in an effort to give your clients a pleasurable experience on your site. This helps to establish a nice flow on your site, as customers will be more apt to click on advertisements with the assurance that you are offering something legitimate.

Now that you?ve come to the end of this article, you can begin to implement the what you?ve learned. You can reach anyone via the internet. Apply what you?ve just read and you are sure to create a successful business.

The Internet Marketing Ebook, Done in Easy Steps ? Internet ...

The Internet Marketing Ebook, Done in Easy Steps

Several internet users find ebooks very handy because it?s highly accessible and provides them with information that they need. All over the world, people are given access to needed information at their fingertips. The more entrepreneurial of them have found a way of gaining profits by selling information products with internet marketing eBook as their medium.

Selling an internet marketing ebook is one good way to make profit online. However, you will need to follow a guide, as just when you get into any type of business. The process of producing an eBook is comparable to that when you are doing a book. They differ in a way that ebooks have lesser number of pages, ranging from around 20-40 pages as compared to a regular book. If writing is not your thing, you can do some techniques in order to release the inner writer within and get your creative juices flowing.

The first thing you would have to do is find out what topic your internet marketing eBook will be all about. Ask yourself whether there?s any particular hobby you are particularly good at. You can convert these hobbies, skills, or talents into topics of your ebook. For example, there are ebooks on how to cook vegetarian dishes, and other how-to?s. Writing about something that is of interest to you makes it easier to compose articles. Organize your ideas, jot them down if you have to, and write along an outline so you will be guided.

You can also choose to write about an unfamiliar topic. If you do this, better use topics that you have longed to learn about. Say you?ve been curious about the natural remedies for some ailments, or you want to compile information about online business models. But whatever you choose, make sure you do enough research about it first so that your reader will benefit from it. Keep in mind that buyers of your internet marketing eBook are searching for essential information which they must find in your ebook. Also, readers don?t want to read books that are disorganized and confusing.

The PDF for an Internet Marketing Ebook

The next step is to create the actual internet marketing eBook and to market it. You can start writing articles for your eBook in your word processing software. Remember to keep the pages to a minimum, since ebooks are usually direct to the point. When you are done, convert your document into a portable document format or PDF. This format makes it easier for readers to view your ebook. Majority of PC?s are PDF ready, and if it isn?t there are free downloadable PDF readers online. When you convert your eBook to PDF, it will retain all the formatting, fonts, colors, and graphics, regardless of what word processing software you used to create it. This is the reason why it easy to use this format. When marketing your ebook, what you need is a website where you can discuss the things that potential buyers can get from your ebook. It can be just a simple one-page website, but make sure that it is interesting. Set up easy payment forms which allows the client to pay online and email them a link where they can download the ebook. You may use Paypal, for payment/checkout methods.

Pilot killed in Iowa air show crash

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) ? A pilot was killed when his plane crashed during an air show in eastern Iowa, authorities said Saturday.

The Soviet-era retired military jet was performing in the Quad-City Air Show in Davenport when the crash occurred, the Quad-City Times reported (http://bit.ly/PUj1zO ). Authorities said the jet was flying in formation with other jets when it failed to pull out of a 45-degree bank and crashed into a field north of Interstate 80 around 1:25 p.m. Saturday.

Assistant Davenport Police Chief Don Schaeffer did not identify the pilot, but said he was not from Davenport.

Schaeffer said at a news conference that the plane flew directly into the ground.

"He never had an opportunity to come out of it," he said.

Nobody on the ground was hurt, but crowds watching the show saw the plane go down and erupt in flames.

Davenport police and federal investigators planned to comb the field Saturday for widely scattered wreckage from the plane.

Schaeffer estimated parts of the plane were strewn over an area up to 220 yards, or a tenth of a mile.

Schaeffer said he had no information about what may have caused the crash. Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration were at the scene, but they did not take part in the news conference.

The crash investigation was expected to resume Sunday morning, Schaeffer said.

(AP) ? Unhappy with his life as a Marine stationed in California, Terence Tyler posed a question three years ago on Twitter: "is it normal to want to kill ALL of ur coworkers?"

Struggling with depression, he left the Marines and recently started working at a supermarket in New Jersey.

On Friday morning, Tyler shot two co-workers and himself, police said. The 23-year-old, clad in desert camouflage gear, opened fire at a Pathmark store in Old Bridge Township, authorities said.

Authorities are investigating his motive, but family members said Tyler was discharged from the Marines two years ago after suffering from depression and had never gotten over his mother's death about five years ago.

Authorities said Tyler left his job as an overnight clerk at the Pathmark about 3:30 a.m. He drove off and returned to the store shortly afterward with a handgun and an assault rifle, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said. About a dozen workers were in the closed store, putting new prices into a computer.

Tyler fired more than 16 rounds from his rifle ? shooting at an employee standing outside and blowing out windows, authorities said. He shot at five other workers in an aisle, killing Christina LoBrutto, 18, and Bryan Breen, 24, the prosecutor said.

Tyler, who began working at the supermarket less than two weeks ago, then drew his handgun and killed himself, Kaplan said.

Several ammunition magazines were recovered along with the rifle and a .45-caliber handgun, he said.

"I do not believe that they were specifically targeted," Kaplan said of the two victims. "I believe everybody in the store was a target."

John Niccollai, president of a foodworkers union, said many of the employees escaped harm when an assistant manager directed them toward a back door.

Breen and LoBrutto were both cashiers. They normally worked day shifts, but pulled overnight shifts every few weeks to put in new price changes, Niccollai said. Tyler began work for Pathmark Aug. 20 as a night clerk, stocking shelves.

Pathmark worker Miranda Miranda said she steered clear of Tyler.

"The way he looked at me, he gave me an uneasy vibe," she said.

Miranda usually worked the overnight shift Thursday but said LoBrutto agreed to work the shift for her a few weeks ago. "That could've been me," Miranda said.

Tyler was discharged from the Marines in 2010, nearly two years in the service at Twentynine Palms, Calif., according to the Marines. The infantryman from New York City never served overseas, said Marine spokeswoman Capt. Kendra Motz. She wouldn't comment on the circumstances of his discharge.

Tyler's Twitter account, which has a photograph identified by family members as Tyler, interspersed posts about hating Marine life, expressions of violence, and his take on football, movies, women and other interests.

"smh is it normal to want to kill ALL of ur coworkers?Maybe but I'm actually in a position where I can, smh," he wrote in June 2009, using the handle (at)Tylerbkstyle and the abbreviation "smh" for "shaking my head."

Tyler tweeted months later about killing.

"I'm starting to see why plp go on killin sprees," he wrote. And these (obscenity) are reeeeeeally pushin my kill everyone I see button."

At the top of Tyler's Facebook page was the motto: "Be optimistic. All the people you hate are going to eventually die."

Christopher Dyson, Tyler's uncle, said Tyler left the Marines after suffering from depression. A cousin said Tyler had been hospitalized.

Tyler, who also lived in San Diego, left California in June for New Jersey, where he lived with his sister and uncle.

"He was a quiet cat, you know?" said Dyson, who works at the store and helped Tyler get a job there.

His cousin, Shanteya Dyson, said Tyler had not been the same since his mother died of cancer.

"That was his best friend. He was always a quiet guy. But he got more quiet. He really didn't speak at all. He was just blank," Dyson said.

Tyler spent the July 4 weekend drinking at Jersey shore bars with Manase Acheantong.

"We went out. We had drinks. He was a normal kid. He didn't start no fights. He didn't seem crazy," said Acheantong, 25, of Old Bridge.

Pathmark's parent company, Montvale-based Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., said the company was "deeply saddened" by the shooting and was cooperating with investigators.

LoBrutto and Breen both graduated from Old Bridge School. LoBrutto was a horn player in the school band and graduated this year, Schools Superintendent Timothy Brennan said. Breen graduated in 2006.

Jessica Ruano knew LoBrutto from school. "She was a really bubbly girl," said Ruano, 16. "She was silly. She was sweet."

(AP) ? GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is accepting campaign contributions by text message.

The campaign's new "text-to-donate" operation, announced Friday, allows mobile phone users to make $10 donations by texting the word "GIVE" to 37377. The Romney campaign said the program would start this week through Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular.

The campaign said other carriers will soon follow.

The Federal Election Commission decided in June to allow text donations in political campaigns. The agency limits donations to $50 per cellphone account per billing period, or $200 total. They are paid through a donor's phone bill. Higher donations would require that donors identify themselves to the campaigns.

Last week, the Obama campaign set up a similar program that allows contributors to text the word "GIVE" to 62262.
