After Years Of Being Separated From Foster Mom, 32-Year-Old Man ...

cnn
Maurice Griffin
?(pictured right) has waited decades to be adopted, and finally at age 32, his wish is being granted. Even though adoption at Griffin?s age is rather odd, the wheels?will be?in motion anyway since he has finally reunited with the only foster Mother who ever treated him like her own son, reports CNN.

SEE ALSO: Kris Humphries Had To Re-Shoot Marriage Proposal

Griffin was placed in the home of Lisa Godbold (pictured) and her then-husband in the 1980s, after they spotted him at an orphanage not too far from their Sacramento, Calif., home. Griffin was 9 years old and is biracial, while Godbold is White.

Godbold told CNN, ?Interracial relationships weren?t as common or accepted as they are today, and the fact that Maurice was biracial and we were a biracial family, made us a great profile, so to speak.?

The muscular and mohawk-sporting Griffin felt as if he was truly a part of Godbold?s?family.? According to the widowed and now-remarried Godbold, Griffin and her two boys got along great.? Griffin reminisces, ?We were best friends. We?d run around, we did mischievous things, and fun things. It was a good time.?

Griffin was such a perfect fit that Godbold?and her then-husband decided to adopt the boy who was 13 at the time. However, two months before the adoption process was finalized, the foster care agency snatched Griffin out of Godbold?s?home for spanking, which Godbold?believed in at the time.

Godbold told CNN that the agency?s powers-that-be admonished her, ??You can?t spank foster children.? Maurice very much wanted that [to be spanked],? she said. ?We wanted him to feel like the rest of our kids. And there was a difference of opinion with some of the [child welfare] supervisors.?

Godbold contends she battled to keep Griffin but lost in the end because she was told she could lose her own children.

As the years progressed, Griffin and Godbold?lost touch. For Griffin, being removed from the home was devastating, ?It was just an emptiness,? he said. ?I couldn?t talk to anybody about it because nobody was there. I couldn?t call somebody; there was just a void in me.?

Throughout the years, both Griffin and Godbold?continued to search for each other. Griffin was placed in several homes, so his life was constantly in flux. Godbold?s husband passed away in 1998, and she later remarried and changed her last name. Meanwhile, Griffin confessed to CNN that he hit many rough patches in his life and always kept people at arm?s length.? ?I didn?t let anybody get close to me again,? Griffin said. ?I hurt a lot of people.?

Six years ago, Godbold found Griffin on?the social media site MySpace and was able to call him.? He was so overwhelmed by the phone call that he had to hang up to compose himself.

Now the two are reunited and have decided to make their relationship legal. On Friday, both Griffin and Godbold are heading to a San Diego juvenile court and they will finally be Mother and son.

Online Marketing Strategies That Can Help You Out! | Free Web ...

The field of Affiliate marketing is filled with opportunities for both the present and the future. This article contains many tips to help increase your profitability.

Don?t count on Website marketing alone for your income, rather remember to diversify. This applies to this sort of business, because it often takes time for these businesses to become established and to turn any major profit. You may want to consider staying at your present job until you have successfully been in business for a while.

You have to have a superb website before you can attempt to get it ranked. This is priority number one for all webmasters, regardless of their business niche. Making your site look good and operate well from the beginning means less work as time goes on to re-do or fix mistakes.

Consider blogging on a regular basis as a means to improve your internet marketing venture. A blog is a great way to communicate with customers, and notify them of things such as new products. In addition, a blog adds content to your website, which expands your visibility to search engines, which ultimately leads to more site traffic.

NOTE! While a few bells and whistles can enhance your site, avoid making it too busy or distracting. Once a visitor is at your site, you literally have 5 seconds to intrigue them and make them stay.

Use the information you customers tell you about your product when advertising your brand. Even negatives can be spun into a positive. People will respond when they see you using terms they use themselves. Using appropriate vocabulary will allow for an easier time brand messaging.

Watch what the competitors are doing and consolidate your ideas from the knowledge you gain. If you find yourself wanting to be a potential customer of the competition, then obviously their advertising is working. Therefore you need to exploit their methods for your own products.

Do you offer a reward system for people who regularly buy your products? The only thing better than a customer is a repeat customer. It?s very important that you keep people coming back again and again. If you can be generous, you can build up your list of repeat customers. By doing these sorts of things, you create a positive atmosphere around your company and soon it spreads to other people.

One absolute Internet marketing necessity is information security. You need to take every possible step to protect your customers? information when they buy from you. People are concerned about their privacy online, so your goal should be to make your customers know your website and their information is safe.

NOTE! It?s very important to stay in touch with customers. Ask them to do a survey or provide a review about their experience with you.

Sell your products by motivating your customers in a positive way. Emphasize on the benefits that your product will provide to your visitors. Point out what accomplishments they can achieve when they buy your product. Encourage your readers to be successful, and they will believe it too.

Being as knowledgeable as possible will serve you well with Internet promotion. Brainstorming with yourself while reading online tips such as these can help you come up with new and interesting ways to present your business. You can make your business more popular and profitable by employing all of the applicable advice you?ve just read.

OK, we?re near enough finished for today?

All things being equal, I?ll produce some more business marketing tips for you in about 24 hours. if anything I wrote above is not clear, leave your thoughts in the comments field below and I?ll come up with ideas on what can be done to get you back on track.

Thank you for spending your precious time with me today and talk with you shorty.

10 Tallest Apartment Buildings In The World (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

It doesn't take a city dweller to appreciate the idea of living in a magnificent skyscraper. Not only are the views from high-rises often breathtaking, but the amenities that accompany the structures are usually equally as extravagant. To satisfy our curiosity about the best and the biggest, we did a little research on the tallest apartment buildings in the world -- and it turns out that one city in particular has quite the monopoly of them. Can you guess which one? Click through the slideshow below to see the ten tallest apartment buildings in the world, and here's the view from the top of the Princess Tower in Dubai's Marina district.

  • 1. The Princess Tower

As of 2012, The Princess Tower in Dubai, United Arab Emirates stands as the world's tallest residential skyscraper at 1,358 feet. With 101 floors (according to Emporis), the tower is located in the city's Marina district -- the only area in Dubai where Western Europeans form the majority.

  • 2. 23 Marina

Also in Dubai's Marina district is 23 Marina, and at 1289 feet, it stands as the world's second tallest residential building. The 23 Marina boasts a 6-story entrance hall to receive residents, 8 elevators and 57 swimming pools among other lavish amenities. Check out this promotional video to learn more about the skyscraper.

  • 3. Elite Residence

The third largest apartment building (at 1248 feet) is in the same one-mile radius of the first two. Elite Residence stands at number three in Dubai's Marina district. Though the floor count stops at 87, this building's exceptional view over the man-made island Palm Jumeirah makes it just as desirable.

  • 4. The Torch

If you couldn't already tell, Dubai has amassed quite a few of these incredible architectural sites. And the city caps off our list's top four spots with 'The Torch', a high-rise that stands at 1105 feet. Also in the Marina district, 'The Torch' joins Dubai's impressive line-up and solidifies the city as the leading developer of residential skyscrapers.

  • 5. Queensland Number One (Q1)

At number 5 is Australia's 'Queensland Number One' (1058 feet), or simply Q1. Located in Surfer's Paradise on the Gold Coast, Australia, Q1 is the tallest building in both the country and the Southern Hemisphere.

  • 6. HHHR Tower

Returning to Dubai, number 6 on our list goes to The HHHR Tower (1042 feet), designed by Al Hashemi (a UAE-based architectural firm.) Watch the accompanying video for more details on this building.

  • 7. Ocean Heights

The final residential skyscraper from Dubai goes to Ocean Heights, an unusual structure with a slight curve that stands at 1017 feet. Be sure to watch the promotional video for an inside look at the building.

  • 8. The Gramercy Residences

Named 'The Gramercy Residences', the building is modeled after New York City's Gramercy Park. Projected to be the 8th tallest residential building, the exclusive complex is located in Makati, Philippines. Still in-progress, construction plans are explored in greater detail in this promotional video.

  • 9. The City Of Capitals

Moscow, Russia makes the list with its multi-complex named 'The City of Capitals.' 'Moscow', the tallest of the buildings, stands at 1016 feet. Together, the structures symbolize the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

  • 10. We've The Zenith Towers

'We've The Zenith' of Busan, South Korea is a multiplex of 3 residential towers. Tower A stands tallest among them at 988 feet, while Tower B and Tower C stand at 924 feet and 869 feet, respectively. The complex is the second tallest building in South Korea.

Friday Favourite: Gaming in Silence ? Dungeon's Master

On Friday we comb through our extensive archives to find an older article that we feel deserves another look. From December 5, 2011, Dungeon?s Master once again presents:?Gaming in Silence.

Playing D&D is a social experience. It?s often as much about getting together with your friends as it is about killing monsters. But I?ve noticed that we spend a lot of time talking about stuff that isn?t even related to the game. This has really become a big problem in public-play games at my FLGS. I?ve noticed that over the past few sessions of D&D Encounters I?ve had to ask people (with alarming frequency) to stop talking when it?s not their turn and pay attention to what the other players are doing, and that got me thinking: what if you weren?t allowed to talk during an encounter or an entire gaming session? How would things change?

To begin this kind of gaming experiment, the DM must make it clear to the players right from the outset that anything they say, anything at all, even if it?s something that their characters obviously wouldn?t say, is going to count as an utterance by their PC. Absolutely everything the player says his character says. No exceptions. Silence is going to be the key to success. Excessive noise will either force the PCs to fight something they know they have no chance of defeating (hence all the sneaking around) or it will lead to a final confrontation that is a lot more difficult because the PCs kept talking. In either scenario, the stakes should be incredibly high.

So let?s imagine a scenario where this would make sense. It needs to revolve around the PCs remaining undetected for as long as possible. Normally this is just a matter of good planning and Stealth checks, but for this to work there needs to be more going on. I?m envisioning a situation where any noise the PCs make will make their job harder. The first two setups that came to mind were an infiltration into a secure lair or fortress, or an escape from one of these places.

I like breaking in a lot more than breaking out, so let?s run with this example. The PCs have to infiltrate a section of the Underdark in order to rescue a hostage, retrieve an item, or defeat a monster that poses a significant threat to a nearby community. Sounds exist in the Underdark, so a party that attempts to move silently and doesn?t flub too many rolls shouldn?t attract undue attention. The heroes? progress will likely be dismissed by their enemies as background noise. Until they talk. The PCs? voices, and more importantly the common language of the surface dwellers, is completely out of place and will immediately alert anyone who overhears them. Now the stage is set.

Of course another option is to say that the PCs are in an area under a magical silence spell. I?m not wild about going this route, but it might make sense if the DM only wants to try gaming in silence for one or two encounters. I once read an adventure hook where a powerful Bard was imprisoned in the dungeon?s lowest level. A magical silence spell on the entire floor kept the Bard from using his lyrical magic to free himself or harm his jailers. It?s simple and forces the players to stay silent.

Regardless of the setup, when combat does happen tactics need to account for stealth. Obviously any fighting will make noise, but tactics like focusing fire will help drop foes quickly. If the party has been lucky enough to remain silent during their approach they could even get a surprise round which could be all they need to complete an encounter fast and quietly. After combat have the PCs make a few checks ? Stealth to hide evidence of the fight and Perception or Dungeoneering to detect the approach of anything curious enough to investigate the noise. After a certain time period has passed the PCs can proceed.

The players need to realize that every time they talk there is a negative consequence. The DM should track how many times the PCs violate the no talking rule and have a sliding scale of repercussions. Personally I like the idea of a monster that can absorb sound. When the players talk the final monster becomes more powerful. Think of how much harder it will be for the PCs is if the DM kept increasing the monster?s maximum hit points every time it absorbs sound from the PCs talking. A creature that began with 200 hit points but ends up with 350 because you couldn?t keep your mouth shut will teach the players and the PCs a lesson in being quite.

One important detail to note is that powers with the Thunder key-word are by their very definition going to make a lot of noise. I don?t think it?s right to penalize PCs because the power they though was coolest happened to be a Thunder power; however, a PC that only has a couple of Thunder powers should be strongly discouraged from using them during this kind of silent gaming (at least until their cover?s blown and they?re in the final fight).

Now that we?ve got a few ideas on how to set things up let?s look at how they?d play out. Imagine how combat would work if none of the players can talk. On your turn you move your mini where you want him to go, indicate the opponent (if it?s not obvious), say the name of the power you?re using, make your rolls and resolve damage, and then explain any other effects that accompanied the power. That?s it. You don?t have to announce that you?re shifting one square. We?ll realize that?s what you did. You don?t say you?re using an action point you just take that extra action. If your actions don?t affect other characters (say you?re healing yourself, drawing a weapon or drinking a potion) then don?t say anything. Just do it and indicate when your turns over. The DM may allow ?done? to be the only word that?s exempt just to keep things moving.

This really forces the players to pay attention. If you?re a defender then you have to watch for monsters that trigger your mark. Leaders need to watch their allies, pay attention to who?s bloodied and whose not, and heal when you feel like it and not when someone asks for it. You really don?t realize how much conversation happens during combat until you eliminate it all together.

Obviously this kind of play requires a lot of trust. If the players aren?t honest about what they?re doing on their turn simply because they don?t have to announce every little thing then it?s ruined for everyone. But if they get into it, I think the results will be fantastic. It might be tough at first but as a few round go by the players will get more comfortable and will really get the hang of it. I?d also bet that combat goes a lot faster.

I encourage DMs to try gaming in silence, even if it?s just for one encounter. See how things change at your gaming table and more importantly see what the players learn from the experience.

Is excessive table talk a problem in your games? Do you think gaming in silence would successfully highlight how important it is to pay attention or do you think players would just keep talking despite any negative in-game consequences? Has anyone actually tried this before? How did it go?

Dow winning streak at 10 days, longest in 16 years?

Stocks closed near session highs Thursday, with the Dow logging its first 10th-straight winning streak for the first time since 1996 and the S&P 500 within a hair's breadth of its all-time closing high, lifted by a better-than-expected jobless claims report.

"This could be the greatest bull run since the '80s only because there's nowhere else for investors to go," said Alan Valdes, director of floor operations at DME Securities. "The Fed's pumping $85 billion a month into the market so there's no way for it to go down, but everyone's got their finger on the trigger because they don't know when this is going to turn."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained above 14,500 for the first time, and logged its 10th consecutive rally. Cisco and Verizon led the gainers.

The blue-chip index is up 10 percent so far in 2013, on track to logging its best first-quarter performance since 1998. Historically, a strong first quarter indicates robust gains for the year. Since 1950, there have been only 12 other instances where the Dow was up more than 8 percent in the first quarter and in each of those years, the index finished positive 100 percent of the time.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 83.86 points, or 0.58 percent, to end at 14,539.14. Hewlett-Packard and IBMled the gainers, logging its first 10th-consecutive winning streak for the first time since November 1996. The S&P 500 rose 8.71 points, or 0.56 percent, to close at 1,563.23 -- just short of its all-time closing high set in 2007. The Nasdaq gained 13.81 points, or 0.43 percent, to finish at 3,258.93.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, ended near 11, falling to a six-year low.

Among key S&P sectors, telecoms and techs led the gainers.

On the economic front, weekly jobless claims unexpectedly declined 10,000 in the previous week to a seasonally adjusted 332,000, according to the Labor Department, marking the third-consecutive week of declines. Economists polled by Reuters expected first-time applications last week to climb to 350,000.

(Read More: Bear Market to Take Hold in 2013: Expert)

Also on the economic front, producer prices increased 0.7 percent in February, gaining by the most in five months as gasoline prices spiked, according to the Labor Department.

And current account deficit narrowed to $110.4 billion in the fourth quarter, according to the Commerce Department. Economists had expected the gap to widen to $112.8 billion from a previously reported $107.5 billion for the third quarter.

President Barack Obama is expected to return to Capitol Hill for the second in a three-day set of meetings to try and reach a compromise with Republicans on how to trim the fiscal deficit. However, in an interview with ABC that aired on Wednesday, Obama warned that agreement could prove impossible. (CNBC Explains: Sequestration)

"Ultimately, it may be that the differences are just too wide," Obama said.

Men's Wearhouse surged after the men's clothing retailer hired Jefferies to evaluate strategic alternatives for its K&G division and authorized a new $200 million stock buyback program, which helped overshadow the firm's weaker-than-expected quarterly earnings.

Samsung is set to unveil its Galaxy S4 smartphone in New York City and analysts speculate that the new version will include an eye-scroll function and feature a bigger screen than the current Galaxy S3.

"Apple's status has been steadily undermined by the flawless execution Samsung has demonstrated in the more frequent iterations of its Galaxy smartphone offering," said David Garrity, principal at GVA Research. "Whether the Galaxy 4S will be the product generation that moves Samsung squarely ahead of Apple as innovation leader remains, but it clearly is a message that Samsung has been aggressively marketing."

Apple shares have continued to tumble in recent months, falling nearly 40 percent from its all-time high of $705 in September. And in the latest blow to the tech giant, research house IDC on Wednesday said shipments of tablets running the Android operating system is expected to top the iPad this year for the first time. Still, Apple edged higher Thursday after BTIG raised its rating on the iPhone maker to "buy" from "neutral."

Meanwhile, Google announced it will retire its Google Reader in July, citing declining usage. This follows Wednesday's news that Andy Rubin will step down as head of Google's Android division, and will be replaced by Sundar Pichai.

Amazon.com declined after JPMorgan downgraded the online retail giant to "neutral" from "overweight." Meanwhile, Ebay climbed after Evercore Partners upgraded the online auction site operator to "overweight" from "equal weight."

Etrade tumbled to lead the S&P 500 laggards after the company's largest investor Citadel said it is selling its entire stake in the firm, ending a five-year relationship.

The Treasury will auction $13 billion 30-year notes on Thursday, with results available shortly after 1pm ET.

European shares traded at 4-1/2 year highs, as European Union heads of state headed to Brussels to discuss the region's austerity measures and rising youth unemployment.

"With the euro area economy having contracted in each of the past five quarters? and with countries' fiscal policy plans set to be reviewed, this summit provides an opportunity for policymakers to give permission to struggling countries to go a little easier on the austerity," wrote Emily Nicol, an economist at Daiwa Capital.

Pakistani activist for poor shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) ? Gunmen shot and killed a pioneering Pakistani activist in Karachi who helped bring services like sewer and water to the city's poorest neighborhoods, a police official said.

The killing was a sign of the escalating chaos that has gripped Pakistan's largest city.

Perween Rahman, the director of the Orangi Pilot Project, was on her way home Wednesday night when she was shot and killed by gunmen on a motorcycle, said senior police officer Javed Odho.

She was struck four times in the chest and neck and died on the way to the hospital, he said. Rahman, 54, was an architect who left private practice early in her career to help the poor.

Through her work, she became one of the authority figures on the ever-expanding Karachi and the struggles of millions of poor people who try to eke out a living in some of the most neglected neighborhoods. Friends and colleagues were devastated by her death.

"Anyone trying to understand Karachi would go to her," said Zora Yusuf, who heads the Pakistan Human Rights Commission. "It is very, very depressing, very disturbing."

The Orangi Pilot Project operated in the squatter slums that make up a huge part of Karachi. The innovative project, started in the 1980s, helped residents of those poor communities build their own sewer and water systems.

The port city is a sprawling metropolis of roughly 18 million people.

It is made up of a mish-mash of essentially illegal land settlements where poor people purchased land from developers and built their homes. Few of these settlements have basic services like sewage lines or running water, let alone access to hospitals or schools.

Often the same people that sell the land then sell services like water delivery, and residents have no option but to buy them.

"The government itself has failed in these areas," said Yusuf.

The Orangi project worked with residents to build services. The organization would couple its technical expertise with labor from residents in the affected community to build things like sewer lines and would lobby the government to build a main sewer line that all the other neighborhoods could connect with.

NPR correspondent Steve Inskeep wrote extensively about Rahman and the Orangi project in his book on Karachi, "Instant City: Life and Death in Karachi."

In the book, he described Rahman as a thin, raven-haired woman "with a musical way of talking." He said she was educated as an architect but quickly left the firm she was working at because she wanted to do something that would help local residents.

There was no claim of responsibility for the shooting but Rahman's work had sometimes put her in the middle of dangerous situations in a city where the security situation is deteriorating swiftly. Inskeep described in his book how armed men at one point burst into the project's office.

Rahman had not received any specific threats recently, said Abdul Waheed Khan, a senior program manager at the OPP. But he said the nature of their work often involved challenging various criminal groups ? referred to as mafias in Karachi ? that control the land or water delivery in these poor areas.

Land and access to it is big business in the city, which has mushroomed from 1947, when its population was 435,000, to at least 18 million now.

With the chaotic growth came an often deadly fight for control of the city's land, because anyone who controls it can make a fortune subdividing and reselling it.

Meanwhile, a bomb planted outside a cable TV office in Karachi killed three people and wounded four others after midnight, police officer Sadaqat Ali said Friday.

Galaxy S IV gets detailed in extensive early preview, screen examined up close

We haven't exactly been lacking for leaks of Samsung's new Galaxy S IV ahead of its launch later today, but those looking for yet more can now get their fix courtesy of an extensive preview/review of the still-unofficial phone published by IT168. That's the same site that's been the source of a number of those aforementioned leaks in recent days. While it's still not clear if the phone in their possession is identical to the Samsung's final retail device, it certainly appears to be a well-polished version, and decidedly familiar for anyone accustomed to the Galaxy S III. The preview goes particularly in-depth on the phone's screen, even going so far as to put it under a microscope to compare it to the Galaxy S III and Note II. Hit the source link below for a closer look yourself.

Senate immigration group: National ID too costly

(AP) ? Senators working on a sweeping immigration bill will likely abandon the idea of a new high-tech ID card for workers because it's too expensive, a key negotiator said.

That means their emerging legislation, which they've promised will crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants, likely will seek to expand a little-used system criticized as error-prone and vulnerable to fraud that employers can use to check the legal status of workers, mainly using Social Security numbers.

The system, called E-Verify, is now purely voluntary, and officials with labor and immigrants' rights groups say it would have to be greatly improved before being required nationally.

Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., members of the bipartisan Senate immigration negotiating group, had championed creation of a biometric ID card instead that would use personal markers such as fingerprints to make it easy for employers to check the status of prospective hires. But Graham said cost estimates came back higher than he expected.

"That seems to have been cost-prohibitive, so we're looking at other ways to achieve the same goal," Graham told reporters this week at the Capitol.

Graham said no final decision had been made on ditching the biometric ID card idea, which had also sparked civil liberties concerns, and he declined to say how much such a card would cost. A study by the University of California, Berkeley Law School's Warren Institute last year estimated start-up costs to the government for such a program would top $22 billion.

For Graham, Schumer and the other six senators trying to finalize an immigration bill by next month, a workable employer verification system is fundamental to legislation that also would secure the border, improve legal immigration and provide eventual citizenship to the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants already here. The immigration bill signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986 is often criticized because it legalized nearly 3 million people while offering assurances that employers would have to verify the legal status of workers, but included no real mechanisms to ensure that happened.

Graham said that no amount of border enforcement would stop the flow of illegal immigrants without measures to keep employers from hiring them.

"If you don't control who gets a job, it doesn't matter how high the fence is," Graham said. "The best virtual fence is an employer verification system."

E-Verify was launched as a pilot program in 1997 and now is used by about 7 percent of employers. It's largely voluntary as a federal program but mandatory in some states. Draft immigration legislation by President Barack Obama, which he has said he'll offer if the Senate group doesn't come to agreement quickly enough, would make E-Verify mandatory nationally, and the Senate group is likely to take the same route.

E-Verify allows employers to electronically submit prospective workers' Social Security numbers or other information to be checked against government databases. Critics say it's error-prone because of mistakes in government records and that it has no reliable way to catch someone who is using a fraudulent Social Security number. Immigrants' rights groups also complain that workers can't easily contest disqualifications and that employers have been known to misuse the program by threatening to run workers through E-Verify if they try to organize a union.

The federal Citizenship and Immigration Services, which helps administer the program, says it's gotten progressively easier to use and more accurate.

"Improving the accuracy of the E-Verify system remains our primary goal," Soraya Correa, an associated director at the agency, told a House hearing last month.

But because of how hard it is for a worker to contest a disqualification, critics say any error rate is too high.

"The error rate is low but when applied to the entire American workforce, every workplace in the U.S., that's a problem," said Emily Tulli, an attorney at the National Immigration Law Center. "Only 7 percent of employers are currently utilizing it so if you think about taking that utilization from 7 percent to 93 percent more, it is problematic."

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce opposed E-Verify for years as cumbersome and unwieldy, but recently decided to support it as long as certain protections are in place for businesses. Randy Johnson, the Chamber's senior vice president for labor, immigration and employee benefits, said the program has improved, and for businesses, it's a reasonable price to pay as part of an overall immigration overhaul. Business supports an immigration overhaul in part because it would ensure a reliable workforce.

Businesses "see this E-Verify system as a necessary slice of the pie to move comprehensive immigration reform forward," Johnson said.

If they do expand E-Verify, senators are expected to endorse ways to make it more reliable and better at detecting ID fraud, such as by expanding the use of photo IDs in the system. For many lawmakers, especially Republicans skeptical of immigration legislation, an airtight employer verification system will be necessary for them to be able to support the bill.

But critics are skeptical that any changes would make the program acceptable.

"The system is still too error-prone," said Chris Calabrese, an attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union. "It will prevent lawfully present Americans from being able to work."

Census: Record 1 in 3 US counties are now dying

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A record number of U.S. counties ? more than 1 in 3 ? are now dying off, hit by an aging population and weakened local economies that are spurring young adults to seek jobs and build families elsewhere.

New 2012 census estimates released Thursday highlight the population shifts as the U.S. encounters its most sluggish growth levels since the Great Depression.

The findings also reflect the increasing economic importance of foreign-born residents as the U.S. ponders an overhaul of a major 1965 federal immigration law. Without new immigrants, many metropolitan areas such as New York, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh and St. Louis would have posted flat or negative population growth in the last year.

"Immigrants are innovators, entrepreneurs, they're making things happen. They create jobs," said Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican, at an immigration conference in his state last week. Saying Michigan should be a top destination for legal immigrants to come and boost Detroit and other struggling areas, Snyder made a special appeal: "Please come here."

The growing attention on immigrants is coming mostly from areas of the Midwest and Northeast, which are seeing many of their residents leave after years of staying put during the downturn. With a slowly improving U.S. economy, young adults are now back on the move, departing traditional big cities to test the job market mostly in the South and West, which had sustained the biggest hits in the housing bust.

Census data show that 1,135 of the nation's 3,143 counties are now experiencing "natural decrease," where deaths exceed births. That's up from roughly 880 U.S. counties, or 1 in 4, in 2009. Already apparent in Japan and many European nations, natural decrease is now increasingly evident in large swaths of the U.S., much of it rural.

Despite increasing deaths, the U.S. population as a whole continues to grow, boosted by immigration from abroad and relatively higher births among the mostly younger migrants from Mexico, Latin America and Asia.

"These counties are in a pretty steep downward spiral," said Kenneth Johnson, a senior demographer and sociology professor at the University of New Hampshire, who researched the findings. "The young people leave and the older adults stay in place and age. Unless something dramatic changes ? for instance, new development such as a meatpacking plant to attract young Hispanics ? these areas are likely to have more and more natural decrease."

The areas of natural decrease stretch from industrial areas near Pittsburgh and Cleveland to the vineyards outside San Francisco to the rural areas of east Texas and the Great Plains. A common theme is a waning local economy, such as farming, mining or industrial areas of the Rust Belt. They also include some retirement communities in Florida, although many are cushioned by a steady flow of new retirees each year.

In the last year, Maine joined West Virginia as the only two entire states where deaths exceed births, which have dropped precipitously after the recent recession. As a nation, the U.S. population grew by just 0.75 percent last year, stuck at historically low levels not seen since 1937.

Johnson said the number of dying counties is rising not only because of fewer births but also increasing mortality as 70 million baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964 move into their older years. "I expect natural decrease to remain high in the future," he said.

Among the 20 fastest-growing large metropolitan areas last year, 16 grew faster than in 2011 and most of them are located in previously growing parts of the Sun Belt or Mountain West. Among the slowest-growing or declining metropolitan areas, most are now doing worse than in 2011 and they are all located in the Northeast and Midwest.

New York ranks tops in new immigrants among large metro areas, but also ranks at the top for young residents moving away.

In contrast, the Texas metropolitan areas of Dallas, Houston and Austin continued to be big draws for young adults, ranking first, second and fourth among large metro areas in domestic migration due to diversified economies that include oil and gas production. Phoenix, Las Vegas and Orlando also saw gains.

By region, growth in the Northeast slowed last year to 0.3 percent, the lowest since 2007; in the Midwest, growth dipped to 0.25 percent, the lowest in at least a decade. In the South and West, growth rates ticked up to 1.1 percent and 1.04 percent, respectively.

"The brakes that were put on migration during the Great Recession appear to be easing up," said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution who analyzed the migration data. "Native migrants are becoming more 'footloose' ? following the geographic ups and downs of the labor market ? than are immigrants, who have tended to locate in established ethnic communities in big cities."

"Immigration levels are not where they were a decade ago, but their recent uptick demonstrates the important safety valve they can be for areas with stagnating populations," he said.

Mark Mather, an associate vice president at the Population Reference Bureau, noted that political efforts to downsize government and reduce federal spending could also have a significant impact on future population winners and losers.

Since 2010, many of the fastest-growing U.S. metro areas have also been those that historically received a lot of federal dollars, including Fort Stewart, Ga., Jacksonville, N.C., Crestview, Fla., and Charleston-North Charleston, S.C., all home to military bases. Per-capita federal spending rose from about $5,300 among the fastest-growing metros from 2000 to 2010, to about $8,200 among the fastest-growing metros from 2011 to 2012.

"Federal funding has helped many cities weather the decline in private sector jobs," Mather said.

Other findings:

?Roughly 46 percent of rural counties just beyond the edge of metropolitan areas experienced natural decrease, compared to 17 percent of urban counties.

?As a whole, the population of non-metropolitan areas last year declined by 0.1 percent, compared with growth of 1 percent for large metro areas and 0.7 percent for small metropolitan areas.

?In the last year, four metro areas reached population milestones: Los Angeles hit 13 million, Philadelphia reached 6 million, Las Vegas crossed 2 million and Grand Rapids, Mich., passed 1 million.

?Chattahoochee County, Ga., home to Fort Benning, was the nation's fastest-growing county, increasing 10.1 percent in the last year.

The census estimates are based on local records of births and deaths, Internal Revenue Service records of people moving within the United States and census statistics on immigrants.

(AP) ? Here's a Super Bowl twist: A guy who helped Baltimore beat San Francisco for the NFL title is now poised to join the 49ers.

San Francisco acquired wide receiver Anquan Boldin from the Ravens for a sixth-round draft pick Monday. Boldin, a star in Baltimore's run to the world championship last season, must pass a physical to complete the deal.

The Ravens announced the trade Monday, prompting a disappointed response from quarterback Joe Flacco.

"Anquan was a great receiver for myself and for our football team," said Flacco, who signed a six-year, $120.6 million deal with the Ravens last week. "It's sad to see a guy like that go, but at the same time you want what's best for him and you just wish him the best of luck.

"Anquan was a big part of this football team, a big part of this offense. He's one of the many reasons we won the Super Bowl this year."

Boldin had six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown in the Ravens' 34-31 Super Bowl victory over the 49ers. Boldin also had five receptions for 60 yards and two scores against New England in the AFC title game.

But he was due $6 million in 2013, the final year of his contract. After Boldin and the Ravens failed to agree on a restructured deal, Baltimore worked a deal with San Francisco rather than to simply cut him from the roster.

Boldin and former Cardinals teammate Larry Fitzgerald were in West Africa on Monday, continuing their efforts with international relief. Boldin was expected to remain in Africa through Thursday and was not immediately available for comment.

But some of his former teammates had plenty to say.

"It's a business, man. Those things are going to happen," wide receiver Jacoby Jones said. "I wish Q the best. He's always a Raven with me, and we got something they can't take from us."

News of the deal came shortly before several members of the Ravens, including Flacco and Jones, gathered to watch a screening of a DVD documenting Baltimore's magical 2012 season.

Boldin and guard Bobbie Williams, whose contract was terminated last week, were featured prominently in the movie. Free agents Paul Kruger, Ed Reed and Dannell Ellerbe may also be gone by the time Baltimore begins training camp starts in July.

Before entering the theater, Ravens defensive end Arthur Jones said of losing Boldin: "That's really unfortunate, but that's part of the business. Right now we're here to celebrate the time that we did have with him."

The 32-year-old Boldin had said he'd consider retirement rather than leave Baltimore. But going to the NFC champions might change his mind.

A 10-year veteran, Boldin led Baltimore with 65 catches for 921 yards and four TDs in 2012. He was sensational in the postseason, totaling 16 receptions for 276 yards and three scores.

Boldin was also a strong voice in the locker room and a teacher to second-year wide receiver Torrey Smith, who will likely become Flacco's top target in 2013.

"Definitely shocked," Smith said of the deal. "You lose a great guy, a great leader. A mentor. All of that."

Smith was more concerned about being in the huddle without Boldin than taking over as the Ravens' top pass-catching threat.

"It's not so much about football when you lose someone like that, someone you love like a brother and would do anything for you," Smith said.

Boldin spent the first seven seasons of his NFL career with Arizona, which lost the 2009 Super Bowl to Pittsburgh. In that game, Boldin caught eight passes for 84 yards.

He came to Baltimore in a trade before the 2010 season. The team reached the playoffs during all three of his seasons with the Ravens.

"A veteran like that, you lose a lot," Jones said. "You learn a lot of routes from him, moves, what he sees. He passed that on to us."

The Ravens knew changes were coming, so the deal didn't come as a total shock.

"Not necessarily surprised," Flacco said. "You see things like this happen every year in the NFL. It's just the nature of the business. ... Now we've got to put some faith in our young guys and hope they step up to the table and play the way they're capable of playing."

Yes, I know how that comes across. But let me give you some background?.

For the past 6 months I have been dating a pretty great guy, ?SD?. I had known him for a few years professionally (customer me /service provider - him) prior to getting to know him more personally. Admittedly it started out mostly as a FWB situation as both of us had just gotten out of serious relationships. But as time went on and we spent more and more time together feelings started to develop on both our parts. We see each other 4-5 times a week and he has become one of my best friends. He surprised me at Christmas by taking a few days off of work and driving 6 hours to spend the holiday with me and my family. I will bring him and his employees lunch sometimes and I will dog/cat/house sit for him when he travels. By all accounts we are in a loving and happy relationship.

But, (there is always a but?..)

Even though we are not dating and/or having sex with anyone else (that I know of!) we are not officially exclusive or committed. Never had those formal discussions. But a few weeks ago this started to weigh heavily on me. My feelings for him grew and, in turn, so did my expectations for ?us?. So when he returned from seeing his daughter in another country, I decided to sit him down. I told him how I felt about him and told him that I wanted a more solid foundation. I told him I felt like I was floundering. I explained that I was emotionally ready to be in a more serious relationship; whether that was with him or with someone else. Although he had a lot of wonderful things to say about me and what we had together he couldn?t give me what I was asking for. I took a few days to think about it and made the decision to break it off. The last thing SD said to me that night was, ?For what it?s worth, I love you?. That both melted and broke my heart but I wanted more than just words. For the first week without him I was downright miserable. Not because I was lonely but because I missed him so much. The following week was better because I knew I made the right choice for me. But last weekend he had flowers delivered to my home with a lovely ?missing you? card attached. I texted him to come over that night and when he did we basically picked up where we left off?.with one exception?..

I?ve thrown my walls back up. I removed any and all expectations I had of him and for us. I am compartmentalizing my feelings. I have adopted a new attitude that if I see him, I see him. If I don?t, I don?t. I stopped doing all those little relationship things couples do. I?m reverting back to our initial FWB arrangement. But I?m still happy. I love spending time with him. The sex is great. He?s still my best friend. But in the meantime I am now very much open to meeting someone else but I don?t want to give up this wonderful relationship until I do.

Is this wrong? Unhealthy? I am a pretty balanced person overall in life. I gave SD the ?right of first refusal? when it came to taking our relationship to the next level but he passed it up. But if I can keep it real and keep what we have in perspective then why not keep him until I can replace him? Because when I do meet someone else I?d be ending all contact with SD because I feel it would be disrespectful to new guy.

And I should also note that the reason I can keep things in perspective now is because I found out that when his ex-girlfriend and daughter come back to the United States they are going to have to live with him for an undetermined amount of time. EXGF was deported back to her country and she took their daughter with her. But once she is able to re-enter the US he is going to support/sponsor her. If he doesn?t then she won?t come back to the United States with their daughter as she has no place to live here. So, yeah. turns out this is why he doesn?t want to move us to a new level. Or it could be complete bulls**t for all I know and EXGF isn?t really an ?ex? and I?m just a bookmark. But that?s another thread for another time!

Irish,
I have read your previous threads and posts so I offer the following opinion. You know your reality on the ground best but from an outside looking point of view I offer the following:

You and you SO came out of serious relationships and within 6 months of that you became "friends with benefits." Usually when a woman has sex with a man she naturally expects an emotional connection and a relationship to follow. Very FEW women that I know can truly have sex without feelings. This is more of a male trait. Men, on the other hand, can become sexually involved without emotion. It sounds like this is what happened to you.

Is it possible that you two are just rebound relationships for each other? Based on your SO's current situation he is going to have to be heavily invested in his ex in order to be with his daughter. Will you feel like an outsider there? What is his relationship to his ex? You hit on it in your post, is she truly an ex?

Your question of whether you should stay with him until you replace him is entirely up to you based on what you want. You wanted more than "friends with benefits" and he said no. Time to reassess what you value and then decide if you want FWB until you can find someone else. I do think you are right to have your walls up. You showed yourself to him and he rejected you. That must have hurt.

In the end, you know your reality better than anyone else and what is in your heart. Make the best choice for you.

The last thing SD said to me that night was, ?For what it?s worth, I love you?.

The best response for this is "Well, it's worth exactly the amount of commitment you're willing to prove."

The following week was better because I knew I made the right choice for me. But last weekend he had flowers delivered to my home with a lovely ?missing you? card attached. I texted him to come over that night and when he did we basically picked up where we left off?.with one exception?..

If a guy loves you, he'll find a way to keep you. If you let yourself go back to the same ol', then expect the same result. You said you wanted more, and now you're going to shortchange yourself by being unavailable to at least some extent when another quality man comes along. There are some men who won't have a problem with your arrangement, and some who will. I'm a person who multi-dated and did not commit until I saw commitment, and I did not feel guilty about my stance. However, not all women can do that, and not all men are accepting of it. How do you think the kind of guy you're attracted to will respond?

I?m reverting back to our initial FWB arrangement. But I?m still happy. I love spending time with him. The sex is great. He?s still my best friend. But in the meantime I am now very much open to meeting someone else but I don?t want to give up this wonderful relationship until I do.

You're asking for a ton of heartbreak, especially if the stuff below IS what he sees as his permanent relationship. The fact that she took her daughter and he seems ok with supporting her is not something I'd allow these days. She can send their daughter for visits. She doesn't have to be there just because daughter is. If he and she haven't had arguments over it that caused him to complain about having to foot a bill, etc., then it's probably because he's perfectly ok with supporting her - a clear sign that she's not such an EX after all.

Married in VA: Yes, it's very possible we were both rebounds for each other which is why we kept the relationship casual at first. And you are right, it is difficult for women to have a FWB without eventually feeling an emotional connection. I expected that. But both of us were pretty blindsided by the fact that we got as close as we did. And no, I would not be able to accept his ex coming back and living in his home. A couple months ago he told me there was a possibility her citizenship was going to go through and she'd be back "within a few days". Even got plane tickets purchased. I broke it off. We both cried. It was very painful to say goodbye. And his relationship with his ex is friendly. It has to be. She has his daughter.

Kathy: When you read what you wrote, ""Well, it's worth exactly the amount of commitment you're willing to prove", my stomach sank. Because you are absolutely right. I really cherished those words he said to me and now they seem so empty because of his actions. But I needed to hear it. As far as his daughter, he wanted to keep his daughter here in the States (she is legal) but he works so many long hours he didn't feel it was fair to his daughter to not have a parent around full time. And he has no family support. He doesn't want to be a long distance father either. He has a son from a previous marriage who was born when he was stationed in Iraq. He made many mistakes with his son and wasn't there for him. Even today his son calls him by his first name. He doesn't want to repeat those mistakes.

It's just an overall sad situation. I very much desire a committed, happy and healthy relationship. Someone once said to me, "You won't find what you want until you stop accepting what you don't want". I stopped accepted the fact that SD can give me what I want so I'm keeping my options open. But you both are giving me a lot to think about. I need these outside perspectives. I am not able to see this situation for what it is sometimes.

Reese Witherspoon Attends a Family Party With Baby - PopSugar

Reese Witherspoon brought her kids Ava Phillippe and Tennessee Toth along to a family party in LA yesterday. Also along for the fun was Reese's mom, though her middle child, Deacon Phillippe, sat the bash out. Tennessee was carried into the house of Reese's pal with the help of a nanny, who made sure his head was protected from the sun with a little white hat similar to the one he sported during the Witherspoon-Toth vacation to Hawaii in January. Reese has been lucky to embark on another getaway more recently ??just last week she was in Mexico for a girls trip with Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore.

Expert says court case aided Kenya president-elect

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? The International Criminal Court charges Uhuru Kenyatta faces would have crippled a U.S. or European politician: orchestrating murder, rape and deportation in Kenya's 2007-08 postelection chaos. Instead, the charges may have propelled Kenyatta to Kenya's presidency.

Kenyatta on Saturday was named the winner of Kenya's election with 50.07 percent of the March 4 vote.

The win came despite ICC charges, and in spite of warnings from the U.S. of "consequences" for the Kenya-U.S. relationship if Kenyatta were to win, a sentiment echoed by Britain and Europe.

Or, as many Kenyans will tell you, Kenyatta's win may have come because of the outside world's view.

Aly-Khan Satchu, a prominent Nairobi economist, said Monday the ICC and the Carson statement were "the defining narrative" of the election and propelled Kenyatta to power.
